CurlyWhirly
I have had this problem before and I can't remember how I resolved it  What happens is that when I try to enter certain websites with Active X controls on them, I get an error message as shown in my screenshot. This problem also has affected my McAfee antivirus program as explained in another post of mine Click hereI don't know what has happened but perhaps I have 'accidentally' altered one of my settings in Internet Explorer relating to Active X controls? Can somebody point me in the right direction as to which setting (if any) to change back again? Thanks in advance!
djohn
I know your with AOL Curly but it will be in your IE6 security controls that you will find the setting. Open IE > tools > internet options > security tab, click on the custom button and check what setting you have enabled in there. :)
CurlyWhirly
As a started, I have just checked in Internet options > Security > Custom level and I have the following Active X settings:Active X controls and plug-insAutomatic prompting for Active X controls: disableDownload signed Active X controls: promptDownload unsigned Active X controls: disableInitialise and script Active X controls not marked as safe: disableRun Active X controls and plug-ins: enableScript Active X controls marked safe for scripting: enableMicrosoft VMJava permission: High safety - Is this set too high or does it have nothing to do with Active X controls? Also I don't use Microsoft VM but the Sun Microsystems Java program, as I am under the impression that the 'official' Microsoft VM software was withdrawn due to a legal 'issue'? Any help or advice would be very welcome  p.s. I have even restored my PC from a Drive Image 7 backup, but I still get the same error message, so I must have 'accidentally' backed up my data when I already had this problem :(

I think I can remember at one time having two entries of Java in 'Add/remove programs'? Now there is only one (See screenshot)Should there be more than one entry or is this nothing to do with the Active X problem?
djohn
Just checked my settings against yours Curly and I don't have the M/S one any more, I must have removed it when I installed the Sun one.I notice your setting is high, is this what shows in the window when you click on the customize button? Mine is at medium.
CurlyWhirly
I notice your setting is high, is this what shows in the window when you click on the customize button? Mine is at medium.Yes, that is what I see. I have solved the Active X problem on that particular website by using firefox, but I still have the McAfee ActiveShield error :( However, I have just stumbled across a possible solution which I will try out tomorrow. (See screenshot)I should have tried that out before posting here

What I mean is, because I don't have the Microsoft version installed on my PC, would these settings have any control over the Sun VM software? If not, it may as well be disabled. scuzzman
Come to think of it, I'm not sure whether it would have control over the Sun version or not -- I wouldn't think so...That said, if it's not broke, don't fix it -- I'd leave it as it is. djohn
Don't disable the Microsoft one Curly, but take it down to medium setting, same as the Sun one. See how that goes for a while. :)
Cpt James T. Kirk
well. when i installed the java 5 runtime standalone, which is the only way i could get sun. i got an error when i tried the manager download. it said that i didnt have windows installer 2. so anyways, i got it by getting the stand alone version. and when i installed it, it musta erased the old m$ vm. cuz its gone on mine. and i found out just recently that theres a new update for the 5 runtime. but again, i have to get the standalone version to install it. CurlyWhirly
Thanks to everyone who offered me help and advice. :) This is now resolved by using the firefox browser on the websites that I have trouble with Active X controls. I am not sure, but I don't think that firefox uses Active X controls, which may explain why I have no problem with them? I sorted out the McAfee ActiveShield problem by carrying out the instructions at the McAfee website i.e. not just uninstalling it and re-installing but also deleting cookies, removing temporary files, etc. I can't be certain but this problem re-appeared a few days ago, when I had 4 MediaMotor malware entries when I ran Ad-Aware after a recent update. This malware could have altered something?Anyway I have now made a backup while everything is back to normal!
scuzzman
Firefox does not support ActiveX, which is one of the (and probably the most prevalent) reasons it's so much more secure than IE.
CurlyWhirly
Firefox does not support ActiveX, which is one of the (and probably the most prevalent) reasons it's so much more secure than IE.Thanks for clarifying that for me. Also I have noticed that firefox is quicker than IE and so I will continue to use it, and just use IE for downloading XP updates at the Microsoft website. When I try to access it using firefox, I have an error message saying "You need to be running a version of Internet Explorer 5 or higher in order to use Windows Update." :( This could be because I am using a different browser that doesn't support Active X (as you have just confirmed in your reply).
