USB2.0 Problem

Recommended Posts

Well its not a problem actually but...

First of all, are Hi-speed USB and USB2.0 the same thing?

Secondly, I have 6 USB ports on my PC. But I can only get Hi-speed USB using certain ports, not all of them.

For example, when I plug a USB2.0 Thumbdrive into a port at the back of my case, its OK. But when I plug the same Thumbdrive into the port at the front of my case, it says that the port is not a Hi-speed USB port.

But my Mobo manual says that it supports up to 6 USB2.0 ports. So is this a motherboard or Windows issue?

Thanks in advance....

FYI Im using:

Jetway P4MDPT Mobo

(here's the page for the Mobo's Specs http://www.jetway.com.tw/evisn/product/p-4/p4mdpt/p4mdpt.htm )

P4 1.8GHz

512MB DDR RAM

Windows XP Pro SP2

I think I can help explain.

USB High-Speed - 480 MBits/second (USB 2.0 ONLY)

USB Full-Speed - 12 MBits/second (BOTH)

USB Low-Speed - 1.5 MBits/second (BOTH)

USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 are the terms for the version of USB being used, but 1.1 and 2.0 have nothing to do with the speed. USB 2.0 added the specification for USB High-Speed devices, so the two are often (incorrectly) used interchangeably. There are devices that are USB 2.0 compliant, but were USB Full-Speed, NOT USB High-Speed, devices.

However... that said, if the device is only USB 1.1 compliant, then it only will support USB Low-Speed and USB Full-Speed, not USB High-Speed. The device must be USB 2.0 compliant to support all three speeds.

Secondly, your motherboard may have a jumper set incorrectly. You should check your documentation for a USB section. Most have them.

If everything checks out, check your bios. Sometimes there are settings to only operate at a lower speed.
