Guest mumpy joe
Hi,Woke up this morning to find that my laptop was playing up. No reason, as far as I can tell...The laptop is on Windows 98SE, and the last thing I installed was the new MSN beta...Every time windows opens, just as all my desktop icons and everything load up, it stops responding. I can still move the mouse, and the thinking icon by the cursor is still animating, but nothing else. All my work is on that laptop for college, and with deadlines within the next two weeks, this really isn't amusing. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.
nellie2
Have you tried uninstalling msn beta? You should be able to do this in safe mode.. I would also back up your work now.. just in case!
Guest mumpy joe
Yeah i just tried that...no use...Also I can't back up my work, only got an external Floppy drive or CD writer, and my internet/network connection depends on a plug-in network card. Neither of these are usable in Safe Mode...Thanks anyway, I'll keep trying. Any more suggestions?
Guest mumpy joe
Just had a thought...I also installed the new windows update before rebooting last night. Could that have screwed it up? And if so, how do i backtrack that.Is there an easier way of entering safe mode than interrupting the startup?

woodchip
Shut down to DOS and type SCANREG /RESTORE press enter key choose date before the update and press enter there are 5 dates. Hope you have not stated too many time after the update. PS note the space before /RESTORE

woodchip
Then start with a Win98se Floppy startup disc, from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm tenth file down. put a floppy in drive and double click downloaded file. this creates a boot disc after starting with floppy disc just type the above at A:\> it should look like this.A:\>SCANREG /RESTORE press enter key
