Automatic download

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or are microsoft products designed to annoy you at least once every five minutes? Today the automatic update thing tells me there are updates awaiting (it tells me every day that my PC is highly vulnerable to evildoers, apparently because I use Windows). Anyway, cutting it short, I agree to download 10MB of stuff to update XP, click yes, and... all signs of contact with microsoft disappear. No progress bar so you can see what's being downloaded and how long it0's going to take. Zero. Even the "automatic update" button on the whats-it-called taskbar, toolbar, system tray, is gone. What usually happens is that some time in the future a new dialogue box will pop up saying "You have new software to install". I hope. Question: is there any way to force automatic update to account for its activities on my PC?

thanks

YES. Ignore the little gold shield when it appears, and instead click on Windows Update. Select 'Custom install' instead of automatic, and select what you want. You can then watch the download and installation.
