Updating IE-SPYADD

I noticed that there was an update on April 14, 2005. I tried to follow the instructions, including the nice tutorial, but have not being able to update: I tried to uninstall the old version, using the automatic method: using the install.bat file. The DOS screen comes up flashing and would not accept my input of option 1. Then, i tried the manual method, and I am afraid I do not understand how it works: I double click or single click (my setup is for single click) and nothing happens. Please understand I am a novice using the computer! I then tried to uninstall the whole program using Norton Clean Sweep and I could only uninstall the install.bat file, the others are protected and could not be uninstalled. I proceeded to download and install the update, but I am not sure I succeeded because noe I don't see the install.bat file and the only file with today's date is the "choice" file. What do the experts suggest in terms a novice can understand? TIA, Roberto.

I have noticed IE/SPYAD behaving this way on non-admin accounts.

A workaround I have found is,

run ie-ads-uninst.reg. It will ask if you are sure you want to add this information to the registry, click yes.

run ie-ads.reg. Same message as above, once again click yes.

Now, there are 2 different versions.

Both versions of IE-SPYAD install the same block list -- the only difference is the Registry location where that block list is installed.

IE-SPYAD: Installs to...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\ZoneMap\Domains

IE-SPYAD2: Installs to...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\ZoneMap\Domains

In other words, the original IE-SPYAD installs to the Registry location for the current user of the PC; IE-SPYAD2 installs to the global machine location, thus affecting all users and accounts on the PC.

If you want to make sure the list is installed, click Start > Run > regedit and browse to one of the above keys (depending on which version you installed). Your list should be there.

Scarecrow Man: Thanks for your reply & suggestion! I tried it, but could not identify the files. I did check the list of updated restricted sites against the list in my IE and could not find the new sites. Decided to try agin with a clean slate: Deleted the folder in IE-SpyAd and downloaded the updated version. Tried to update manually using ie-ads.reg, double clicking it opened in notepad and no pop-up. Decided to right-click it and selected open with "registry editor" and surprise! the pop-up came up, accepted the action, and the update installed. So, I do not have an explanation, maybe the experts can provide one. Thought to describe my fix in case it can help others with same problem. Incidentally, the install.bat still comes up flashing and no choice allowed. Roberto.

All you needed to have done with the manual uninstall is to double click the reg file to run it. At least that is what I do.

I'm afraid I can't provide any support for IE/Spyad as I didn't write the program... Eric Howes has listed the forums that he visits on the IE/Spyad site. Perhaps if you posted at one of those he might see it and be able to provide you with an answer to your problem!

IE/Spyad is an excellent utillity and I wouldn't be without it! :)

When you right clicked, is "merge" the default option? (bolded)

It sounds like your file associations may have been changed. This would explain not being able to double click it to add it.
