Scarecrow Man Posted April 22, 2005 Report Share Posted April 22, 2005 Long story short, I have a very badly infected PC (viruses/spyware) which also had a lot of corruption to the Windows Installation itself. So I decided to backup what I could (making the drive a slave on a different PC) and format it.Firstly, I had some trouble formatting it. It was a Fat32 disk, and I was attempting to format into NTFS. After unsucessful attempts at that, I put the drive back into it's own machine, and booted from a Windows98 Boot Disk. I ran fdisk and deleted the partition. I then created a new one and had it formatted as Fat32. All was well when done in dos. BUT now I am trying to reinstall windows. I can boot the computer from a CD, thats not the problem. The problem is, it hangs after it is just about done booting. I.E. at the "Setup Is Starting Windows XP" message. (the blue screen that scrolls text along the bottom before loading the GUI for windows install)I have found http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=217073 but dont know if that is going to help. -pops- Posted April 22, 2005 Report Share Posted April 22, 2005 Can you get the the drive manufaturers website and use the facility for re-formatting to "factory state" or whatever the particular maker calls it?My thinking is that you may have some rubbish hidden in there that a conventional format is not able to remove.This method worked for me once with an intransigent Maxtor drive using (I think) Maxblast. No Problems.Put the XP disk in, and clicked "upgrade". After some testing, it rebooted and showed the windows loading screen (with the dots that scroll across) and then it hung again.Hardware problem? but windows 98 works fine.and the compatability wizard on the XP CD shows no errors.
