MrCommunistGen
I recently built a computer for a friend... decent budget gaming computerAsus A8N-EAthlon64 3000 winchester512MB Corsair PC3200XFX 6600GT 128MB PCI-E350W Antec SmartPower PSUAfter I built it I made a point of stress testing the system to make sure that it wouldn't overheat... the guy didn't have money to buy extra fans yet.... stupid I thought.... but its his computer. I also wanted to make sure that the PSU was enough to actually run the system. I ran 3dMark05 like 5-6 times back to back, and the system didnt die, and the processor temp was actually surprisingly low... ~40C via Asus Probe... (my XP 1700 idles @ 42C).Anyway... the problem is that when he plays WarCraft3, after a few minutes the screen goes black... the system is still running... just no picture... and it ONLY happens in WarCraft3 and 1 other game that I forgot. Any input as to what the problem might be? WC3 isnt anywhere as intensive as 3dMark05 so I would assume its not overheating... likewise on the PSU... I'd figure that the draw would be lower in WC3 than 3dMark05...Any suggestions as to what the problem might be? I asked a couple of my friends and one mentioned something about a how mouse/monitor/keyboard can cause a black screen, but with these specific circumstances I doubt this as well... Something else I thought of was that this mobo has a 24pin power connector but the PSU only has a 20 pin with the AUX 4 pin for the processor... Do new ATX2.0 mobos require an ATX2.0 PSU to run right?LAST THING... i swear! He's running a cracked version of XP (agains my vehement disproval) could this be it?thanks!-mcg
Scarecrow Man
LAST THING... i swear! He's running a cracked version of XP (agains my vehement disproval) could this be it?Probably not, but you never know with a cracked version. We cannot support illegal versions of windows, but I can give you advice on what I would do for this problem.I would make sure the video card is securlly inserted and that all cables are connected properly. Also, check the video card for heat. I had a problem with a ATI sapphire over heating during World of Warcraft. Caused the same error. MrCommunistGen
Yeah... as I recall the memory on the card seemed to be running especially hot... maybe some third party ram sinks for his 6600GT? The Core itself seemed to be running decently cool though... I should check...Thanks-mcg
pwp
Game doesn't start. Black screen after Eidos Logo. Check USB devices. Unplug unnecessary USB devices like cameras, scanners, printers etc. Go to TRAOD Settings and see if there are any USB devices listed that are not game related and disable them. There have been reports of settings displaying multiple keyboards. Turn all off except one. taken from tomb raider forum faq this may have some bearing on your black screen problem.usb may also upset warcraft settings? MrCommunistGen
Thank you all! Aparantly the guy DIDNT update his drivers like i told him to do after he set his computer up. He then told me he did while i was trying to troubleshoot it over the phone. I had him look up the driver version for me and after I heard it I told him to update his drivers for real. He did and now the problem is fixed... arg...-mcg
Scarecrow Man
You should purchase a copy of Windows to ensure nothing happens. I have seen cracked windows copies used as drones in ddos attacks, and they are also the reason a lot of viruses exist for windows based pc's.IMHO :DBut I am glad you got your problem sorted out.
