Hi! My flatmates computer is in some pretty desperate need of maintanance at the moment but she and her computer is from Japan. Hence, her start menu as well as most other things are all in Japanese, making it difficult for me to do this work. I'm wondering if there's a language pack or something I could install to convert her standard windows GUI icons to english (and then back to Japanese once I've solved a couple of problems with performance). Is this possible? If anyone could let me know about how to do this it would be tremendously useful....

Thanks in advance of any replies :-)

Chris

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do, except manually translate and change the Start Menu. Japanese Windows is designed to be in Japanese, so there are few language packs to make it appear in another language (they do exist for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, but not for Windows itself, and especially not the Start Menu, which is basically created by user installs. Naturally, Japanese applications are also in Japanese.)

I assume your flatmate is Japanese? You will have to do whatever maintenance it needs with her help. I know this is difficult, especially if your flatmate is not very computer savvy. But it's the only way I can think of.

What sort of maintenance are you planning? Maybe I can give you some tips?

Basically, all Windows components are (almost) exactly the same on Japanese Windows as in English Windows. So if you know what to do on English Windows, just do exactly the same on the Japanese version.
