File repair

Hi:

XP home won't boot up. Black screen says: You can attempt to repair this file "System 32 Drivers /NTFS.SYS " by starting wiindows using original setup CD Rom.

This condition occurred when downloading security upgrade from Microsoft--the power was cut off and the download never completed.

I only seem to have one disk, the application disk.

Is the startup on the same disk?

Tried F-5 to get into Safe mode but that doesn't work either.

How can I get the Cd to load and get to the repair option?

First, Safe Mode is F8.

It sounds like you have an OEM Windows disk. Chances are you also have a recovery disk or partition to recover from things like this. It is like a hard drive image of your computer the way it was when you first brought it home.

You can boot from the CD by setting it as the 1st boot device in your bios (press delete, F2, F12, depending on motherboard, to get into the bios)

You can also try the "recovery console" but if you have an OEM disk, it probably does not have the recovery console included.

Usually a missing system file means your disk is failing, or your installation has become corrupted. You may want to try chkdsk from the recovery console (if you are able to get into it)
