Temperatures

I bought a motherboard bundle with a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz processor, the CPU fan is noisy and i want to quieten it down. The temperatures from Everest Home Edition are;

Motherboard 33C

CPU 56C

Aux 31C

ST 380021A 25C

I have now connected the CPU fan to a controller which has reduced the noise to a nearly acceptable level, and the temperatures have changed to;

M/board 35C

CPU 59C

Aux 28C

ST 380021A 39C

Are these temperatures acceptable, if not is it easy to change the fan, do I just lift the white clips and is there any sealer used, and which fan should I go for?

Your temps should be fine.

As for the changing of the fan: commonly it is actually screwed into your heatsink. Crack open the case and you'll see something like this sitting on top of your CPU:

Yours will likely be much smaller, as this is a high-performance model. See the screws? They'll likely be screwed into the fins of the heatsink. Just get a new fan and mount it in a similar fashion.

Thank goodness for that, I was getting worried now I can leave it and get on with things.

As to the fan, mine has 2 white locking clips which look as if you pull them upwards, one at the top goes to the left and the bottom one goes to the right, it doesn't look like there is a heatsink! does this type just unclip to change it? Not that I'm going to yet. Anyway, thanks for your help, much appreciated,

Is it possible to post a photo of your fan/heatsink sapins? There will be a heat sink between the fan and the CPU, might be that its not obvious to look at. There will not be any paste or pads between the fan and sink, only between the sink and the top of the CPU. Should be quite a straightforward job to remove the fan as in scuzzman's photo or it may have clips as you say, but it is unlikely for the fan to be held on with just clips, normally there are 4 screws to hold it in place.

Look for a decent quality fan, as large as will fit and with slow revolutions to keep the noise down. pops uses quite a few components in his builds that are quiet so he will be able to advise on the make/model that will best suite. :)

Quiet pc specialises in, well quiet pc components. Have a look at http://www.quietpc.com/uk/ they are almost certain to have something to suit.

I get all my cooling/quiet fans from them. They are very quick and efficient in supplying and very helpful.

Also, as madboy says, Kustom pcs are very good but, I think they get their supplies from quiet pc. :)

Sorry I have been so long, been out fishing and then I couldn't get the photo attached, hope this is ok. It doesn't look like there are any screws, just the 2 clips.

If I can change the fan just by un-clipping it I'll get one from Quiet pc if they will deliver here, if not I'll use Kustom pc as I have used them before.

By the way with the fan turned down to the lowest setting on the controller the temperatures are;

M/bd 40c

CPU 59c

Aux 17c (low?)

Hard drive 41c ( was 25c!)

It still sounds too noisy so I hope I can get a quieter one.

I have found what looks like the CPU Fan here, still don't know how to remove it and fit another one, I'll contact Kustom and see what they say.

No wonder it's noisy it only costs £2!

For some time now, I've been using Zalman coolers.

In some of their designs the fan doesn't attach to the CPU itself but is independent. By doing this you can have a very large fan running at a slower speed hence less noise.

I would never go back to the conventional type of cooling system in any of my builds now.
