Ok ill keep this short as i have to go to school soon. Ive pluged my router in and it seemed to be working fine until I tried to connect to its settings. When i typed 192.168.x.x it came up saying that page could not be opened or something. I am currently on aol does that effect things? I could not connect to the internet either :(. I am using a Belkin ADSL Modem With high speed mode wireless G-Router  .

One more thing when I run cmd and try to ping it it fails. When i look at the properties it says it is aquiring something(cannot remember wording).

Im stumped can anyone help me

It probably says "Acquiring network address"

This means that it is attempting to contact your router's DHCP server. If that does not go away, then it cannot contact the DHCP server, and you're likely ending up with an auto-configuration IP (that's a bad thing).

Please disconnect AOL, then connect your router. Restart your computer. After this is done, go to Start->Run and type this in:

ipconfig /all > C:\IPInfo.txt

Then, go back to Start -> Run and type this:

ipconfig /release >> C:\IPInfo.txt

Then, go back to Start -> Run and type this:

ipconfig /renew >> C:\IPInfo.txt

And finally, Start -> Run

notepad C:\IPInfo.txt

A Notepad window will popup: paste its contents here (you should feel safe doing this, as there will be no private information).

Besty: You should also note I have seen this particular error connected to the W32.Mytob virus:

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2 : The RPC server is unavailable.

If you can get online via AOL still, please update your virus definitions and do a complete virus scan.

OK - I'm seeing a few threads that fixed this by doing a WinSockFix, and a few by resetting TCP/IP, so let's try a few things:

1) System File Check:

- Go to Start -> Run and type in

sfc /scannow

- You WILL need your OS CD

2) If that doesn't work, we'll try a winsock fix:

- Download winsockfix.exe

- Run it and click "Fix"

3) Reset TCP/IP

- Go to Start -> Run and type

cmd

- type in

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

into the command window

If all of these don't work, post back.

If one works, please post which it was...

Sorry i havent replied sooner but i forgot as i had exams and holidays and all that crap. Anyway I got rid of the belkin ages ago and have got a netgear 108mbps super wireless adsl router and guess what it doesnt work with my computer either.

The router itself works as when the laptop is hardwired into it it can get onto the internet ( what imtyping on now) but when the desktop is hardwired into it (the way it says on the instruction manual) i keep on getting the exact same problem as last time. I was on with netgear last night and this afternoon and the guy last night seemed confident we could fix it but the guy this afternoon said it was basically the computers fault and to contact my manufacturers which is all well and good but holly.co.uk have closed down (bankrupcy i think).

So same problem and i dont have a clue how to fix it. I have just run the removal tool and it hasn't popped up with anything.

I cant get onto the page where u have to put in 192.168.blah.blah

It is constantly saying aquiring network address. :(

Do i need a new lan card or somethig as it is recognising the router is there just not doing anything with it sorta thing.

Do you know how to ping? Go to Start, click on Run, and type cmd in the Open dialogue, then click Ok. A command window should open up. Type Ping msn.com, then ping mininova.org, and you should get output like the following.

What we're looking for here is the name resolution, not necessarily replies from the site. Do you see how mininova.org resolved to an IP Address of 83.149.119.115? I'm more interested in that part than the Request timed out message. Please try pinging those sites and post the results here.
