D-Link wireless card not recognized by WinXP

I recently purchased a wireless card for my old computer and it is not being recognized WinXP plug-and-play. I am looking for any help that people can give me on the situation.

Hardware:

ASUS P2B-F motherboard - started with BIOS 1009B and upgraded to 1013A (latest non-beta)

PIII - 450, 256 Mg Ram

D-Link DWL-G510 revision A PCI wireless card

Software:

WinXP (don't know whether it is Pro or not)

Problem Description:

The wireless card is not being detected by Plug-and-play at all. Card does not appear in the hardware list. The D-Link configuration software is loaded and can run, but exits when it realizes there is no wireless card available. I have tried the card in 3 different PCI slots, one of which was where my regular ethernet card used to reside. I tried the card in my new machine and it was recognized. The reseller I purchased it from was able to load it into one of his machines with no problem, so I know the card itself is fine.

I have reviewed a fair number of web sites and there seems to be a problem with the combination of P2B-F and DWL-G510, but none of the sites seem to indicate the source of the problem or a potential solution.

Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Most wireless devices require a FULL software/driver install, before any hardware in plugged in. Are you sure you have installed everything before you plugged it in?

Maybe try taking the device out and installing all software, then try again.

I have tried it both ways: installing the software first, then the card and vice versa.

Neither seemed to make any difference on this motherboard. As I indicated in my previous post, I know that the card is good as I have installed it in another machine that I own and plug-and-play does recognize it. I am planning to call D-Link tech support here in Canada this evening to see if they can help me out.

I know that the PCI slots are working as I have attempted to install the card in the existing slot for my wired ethernet card (which, incidentally, is also a D-Link product). I know that the wireless router works, as my wife has a laptop with a D-Link 802-11B card that can connect to the router just fine. Everything I see points to a problem with a conflict between this type of card and this type of motherboard.

If that is the case, than perhaps you need a new card. As for installing wireless cards, software must always be set up first. Do not let plug and play install drivers. Install them first, so plug and play has something to install.

D-Link products are quite good and I have always had good reviews of them. Perhaps you should contact your motherboard manufacturer and see if there is a bios update for this, or perhaps a fix they have found.
