IDE/Atapi driver

Recommended Posts

Some time ago I fitted a new Maxtor 160GB hard drive, namely model 6Y160PO. During installation I followed Maxtor's instructions and downloaded and installed their Big Drive Enabler. Now BIOS, BelArc and Everest recognise it as 163.93GB but Windows, and other programmes, show it as 127GB. Consulting Microsoft knowledge base brought up the information that the Atapi driver was out of date, a new one being on SP1. By this time it was too late to install SP1 as I had installed SP2 with the understanding that SP2 contained all that was on SP1. Maybe it does - except for the Atapi driver. So I downloaded the driver from Microsoft as advised in one of their articles (can't remember which now) but it would not install as, according to the message, SP2 was already installed. After trying a few forums for the answer, and getting no replies, I tried Driver HQ. Their web site done a scan and said the Atapi driver, besides others, was out of date and recommended a new one which I downloaded and tried to install. During the installation proceedure up pops the following message:

An error occurred during the move data process:-113

Component:

File Group:

File: C:\DOCUME~1\BRIAN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\pft6~tmp\data1.hdr

This means absolutely nothing to me except that the driver doesn't want to install so could anyone explain please? Is it something I'm doing wrong, or not doing to start with? Or do I just forget it altogether and create a partition instead?

All advice/help gratefully received.

So what are your currently installed drivers? If they are by Microsoft, version 5.1.2600.2180, then you have the latest drivers (XP-SP2).

What other applications cannot recognize the full size of your HD? What about Windows Explorer or Windows Disk Management?

My apologies for the delay, although I selected notify replies by email, I wasn't.

The driver showing in Device Manager is 5.1.2535, Device Manager also recognises the size. Various other programmes, some Windows, do not, although I can't find the specific Windows progs. just now, other programmes include Diskeeper and BelArc. If it is of any help I will search through everything and list all those that think the hard drive is only 127GB.

Incidentally, the drivers you named, 5.1.2600.2180, are the ones listed as installed for the USB ports.

How many partiotions do you have on that disk ?

I'm only asking because the largest NTFS volume (partition) possible is around 127 GB (FAT32 around 30 GB)... You just might have unalocated disk space ! Try partition magic or another partitioning tool ..

Good luck !

Thank you korgg, I didn't know that. It could well be the answer as I don't have any partitions at all.

As it happens I've got Partition Magic, bought it a couple of weeks ago but done nothing with it yet. I'll have to study the instructions to see what to do.

Thanks again, should have known the answer was something simple, afterall it usually is.
