If the local test was OK, then the chances are that the firewall is the one with the problem...I never used Sygate (in fact other than iptables nothing else), but there should be a place there where you can allow access to your ftp server...

How did you test it: ftp://127.0.0.1 ?? Or your ip address ?

You'll not want to keep your firewall disabled :(

Be sure to open toe firewall config (Program Control, or something similar) and allow the client access to both reach the internet (actual transfer) and act as a server (it needs a data port).
