My inbox and sent items have disappeared

Hi There,

Its been quite some time since I visited you guys. I've been trying to get a new business up and running and to be honest its been EXHAUSTING!!

I just have a little question to ask you.

I left my computer for no more than 5 minutes to grab a lovely cup of red bush tea and when I returned all the e-mails from my Inbox and Sent items had vanished. Deleted items - which I don't need - are of course still there. Typical!

Anyway, and I think I probably already know the answer, does anyone know where they went and why they went, what made them go and will they ever come back!!??

Is there any kind of recovery tool which could find them?

I'm kinda stuck without them so if anyone could help that'd be fantastic!!

Kind regards

Debbie

:( I don't know how you can recover your lost emails but, something that you should have done (and it seems you haven't) is have a backup of all information on your computer, preferably a backup of everything - operating system and settings as well. This is particularly important for businesses in order to comply with all the legal obligations you have.

When someone has sorted you out recovering your lost information, consider a comprehensive backup system as your first priority together with a schedule of carrying out a backup procedure on a regular basis. :)

Hi There Again,

Well, there are certainly some knowledgable people that hang out at Windows Forum - because - guess what.....I managed to get back my Sent Items. They're back!! :P

One tiny problem remains. The Inobx has refused to be found.

I used the programme from the thread you gave me Alan2273 and it scanned through everything and restored the sent items. I'm not sure if I am asking for it to search for the right thing though. All I typed in was Inbox, because I assumed there should be some association for it to work on. Along with the sent items it also replaced deleted items. Which seems funny, as I asked it to find Inbox!!

Hi there again pops - I KNOW you are right - beyond a shadow of a doubt. Its difficult with e-mails though because I receive dozens a day and I need to delete selected e-mails - so it keeps things streamlined. If I back up all e-mails it may cause a degree of confusion - and believe me I already get confused enough

I have kept the results of the scan process to see if I could figure out if the Inbox is lurking somewhere, but it all looks like gibberish to me.

I wondered Alan if you knew how to be more exact when searching for your chosen items to be recovered.

Many many thanks!

Debbie

OK her we go.

Open Disk Investigator / left click to put the spot in Directories (at start up the spot is in Disk) / Left click on the C drive (if that is the drive you want to recover your e-mails from) / left click on program files / left click on Outlook Express / then go to the top line and left click on Tools, left click Search / In Dialogue box enter e-mails / then click search.

Last time I did this it took 24 minutes and recovered 378 e-mails so you will have a lot of reading to do. Have fun. :D

Hi There Again Alan2273

I re-scanned again and this time it just brought up a whole list of 'I'm not quite sure' what. They don't look like e-mails - in fact some of the entries look like Ebay feedback???

I definately went through all the steps you suggested - but it doesn't seem to have worked. :(

Maybe I should put 'Inbox e-mails' into the search - do you think that would help?

Its very difficult to ascertain what the search result information actually is - but it doesn't appear to be the missing Inbox e-mails. It also seems strange that the deleted and sent e-mails have been retrieved but not the Inbox e-mails

I have a sneaking suspicion that they have disappeared into the ether!!

Just out of curiosity - do you have any idea WHY this happened in the first place??

I am totally in your debt for all you've done so far!

Kind regards

Debbie

Hi There Again,

I tried the soft ware but you can only use it for free to recover the last 10 e0mails lost. As I had several more than that to find, I decided to give it up as a bad job.

Many thanks anyway for all your help and I hope you all have a very very nice Christmas (thats if I don't post again before!!).

Very kind regards

Debbie
