Iain McDonald, Microsoft's Managing Director of Windows Server,  wanted to impress on people that it was a "great time to be in our  camp" and that the software giant has a lot of goodies coming out in  the next two years.

McDonald was introduced by a deep voiced MC as "our very own Aussie  success story... originally from Sydney, now working at Redmond".  Impressively McDonald only lapsed into a faux-American accent once or  twice.

Despite all the advice from the PowerPoint template designers at  Redmond, the SQL Server part of the keynote was, um, pretty heavy going.

Attendees got a first glimpse at Windows Vista beta 2, with more of  the anticipated visual features on show. A revamped smooth-scrolling  Alt+Tab popup bar, a glossed up  version of Solitaire and Microsoft's  version of Mac OS X's Expose function which allows you to see all  open windows at a glance.
