Internet access over VPN

Have a laptop that has wireless link to a router (adsl). This then connects to an office network using windows vpn. Weird thing is that when it's connected to the vpn network it can't see the internet.

Looks like it's using the vpn connection to get to the internet but failing. Might be something to do with dns ?

Any ideas appreciated ...

Hello Awake,

It sounds like your computer is trying to use the gateway of the remote network when you VPN in. This is the 'normal' configuration, and is the most secure, however, it sounds like the remote network is either set up to deny access to the Internet, or a roune needs to be added to the router or firewall you're connecting to.

A quick fix to this for you is to uncheck "Use default gateway on remote network" in your TCP/IP Properties for the VPN Connection. To do this, right click on My Network Places, then click on Properties from the menu that appears.

The Network Connections window will open:

In the Network Connections window, find your VPN connection and right click it, then select Properties from that menu.

The VPN Properties window will open:

Click on the Networking Tab, and highlite Internet Protocol (TCP/IP):

Click on Properties and the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window will open:

Click on the Advanced button and the Advanced (TCP/IP) Settings window will open:

Uncheck Use default gateway on remote network. Click Ok in all windows to finish setting. Try it again and let us know if it's fixed.

You should also see whether this is the way your Network Administrator wants things to work for VPN users, or whether he or she needs to set things up so VPN'ed users can get to the Internet through the VPN connection.
