Logic of setting Printer as default?

Hi all,

I used to be under the impression that if we select a printer as default, then any application that invokes a print command will automatically select the default printer to print. But something proved me wrong.

I opened a notepad and selected print. The first time it correctly highlighted the default printer in the 'Print' dialog box. Now I closed the dialog box, changed the default printer, and issued the print command again from notepad (all this while I did not restart the notepad application). The 'Print' window now highlights the previously selected printer even though the default printer has changed. Why does this happen? is there any way I can get it to highlight the default printer at all times?

I noticed that this problem does not occur with MS-office tools like work,excel etc.

I find that if I open an old Publisher or Word project that was first printed using my old printer, I now get a message that the project cannot be printed using that printer, and do I want to change to my new default printer. Don't you also see this message? What I am trying to get across is, that having selected a default printer for a given project, that project will try and select the old printer if it is still connected, even though you have selected a new default printer. Your new default printer should automatically be selected for any new projects.

Some programs may require you to set a default printer in the application.

Some things you could try are, file > print, and see if there is some advanced settings you can change. Some other programs also use "Print Setup" or something similar.

Do you have any of these options?
