user profiles windows xp

I have an account on my windows xp (home edition) machine which identifies me as "administrator". I created two other accounts, for someone else and one for "Guest", both of which are "limited", i.e., according to the xp help, I can prevent them from accessing my "administrator" profile documents and give them access only to the "shared documents" folder. But it doesn't work like that in practice. As "Guest" all I need do is go Start -> My computer -> C drive -> Documents and settings and I can access everything. The XP help doesn't give any info about how you actually restrict access, just says you can. Something's gone wrong somewhere, but not sure how to correct it. Any advice?

Hmm. Not sure how I apply that to my XP home edition. I went looking for properties of the folders under Documents and Settings and found this:

Basically, it gives me the option of ticking the box "Make this folder private" (from other accounts, presumably) but the tickbox is greyed out, so I can't make it private. Down the bottom of the properties box, it says "Windows Firewall is configured to allow sharing of this folder with other computers on the network". If I click on "View Firewall settings" I find nothing about de-configuring that. In fact, I disactivated Windows Firewall in favour of Norton some months ago. Would it help if I ditched Windows Firewall? Or am I stuck with it, active or not (can't see it in the uninstall programs list).

If you go to start/control panel/security center and click on windows firewall (at the bottom of the box ) you can turn it off from there.

As you use Norton firewall you do not need the windows one on.

I've already disactivated Windows Firewall (some month ago when I installed Norton). The problem is my User accounts system isn't working, in that - e.g. as "Guest" account, using Start -> My computer -> C drive -> Documents and settings, I can access the documents of every other account. So I'm trying to do what XP Help says I can do, i.e. restrict access of each account to its own documents folder. I might be on the wrong track but could it be Windows firewall (even if it's disactivated) that prevents me from "making folders private" in Folder prioperties (click on GIF above)?

Logged in as Bill (administrator acount), Under "Computer resources", the tree looks liks this:

The documents of Primavera should belong to account Bill (but instead are accessible to all accounts). If I log in as Suzy (limited), under * File archives I see only Suzy's docs, but through C drive --> Documents and settings, get everything except "Default user". Ditto, logged in as Guest, the documents folder is "Shared documents" but the back door (or front door) through Local drive C is always open.

Hope that's clear. Hopefully someone can tell at a glance where the bug is. Thanks.

Thanks, I've taken a look and it might solve the problem. Just have get through Microsoft's "validation process" first

Yes, that's what everybody has to go through now. However, it is quite a simple process if you use Internet Explorer. If you use Firefox or another browser, then it is a bit more complicated.
