How To 'stealth' Port 113 ??

Hi There,

I just used the 'Shields Up' security checker advised by Homecomputeraid, and all my ports are in stealth mode except port 113.

The subsequent information given by Shields Up describes altering the router 'port-forwarding' configuration so you can change port 113 from a closed port to a stealth port - something about sending out packets to a non-existent IP address.

Does anyone know how to go about this process and would there be any likely complications from taking this action?

A little help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Debbie

Port 113 is the identd daemon. Basically, it allows your computer to identify itself online, and is required to be in state CLOSED by most servers, not STEALTH. If you're using a router, rest assured you're fine. The ShieldsUp will test the router and not the PC. If you're directly connected to a modem though, you can stealth 113 by installing any personal software firewall.

Hi There Again Scuzzman,

Thanks for the reply. There was mention on the Shields Up site of it being beneficial to stealth port 113 so that it couldn't be identified in any respect by any potentially 'upto no good' packets which may pass its way. The site seemed to think there were few benefits to keeping it closed rather than stealthed and that there would be minimal (if any) problem when stealthed.

If you think it best to leave it closed though, I trust your judgement and will leave it closed.

Thanks Scuzzman!

Kind regards

Debbie
