Ok, it's Update Tuesday again; a multitude of updates for Internet Explorer, Windows 2000, XP, and 2003 Server are available. See bulletin for details.

Run http://update.microsoft.com/ if AutoUpdate hasn't already installed the updates.

Amongst the updates there is also a new version 1.9 of the Malicous Software Removal Tool. This time I watched the installation closely, with the task manager open. I can confirm now that MRT.exe is actually run in the background during the install process. And yes, I also found mrt.log in the C:\WINDOWS\Debug folder, with today's date and time of the run.

Sorry for having stated otherwise in the past

You will probably have to restart Windows after the updates; how I hate this :censored: pop-up reminder if you do not immediately restart!
