No longer use Win98SE on dualboot system with Win XP Pro

My PC is dual boot with Win98SE and Win XP Pro. The c:\drive has 98SE, while XP on is the d:\drive.

Now I've got used to XP I no longer use 98SE, so I might as well zap 98SE.

Am I correct using this process:

Boot into XP Pro

Remove/delete everything on the c:\drive - EXCEPT the three boot files, Boot.INI / NTLDR / Ntdetect.com. These three files will remain in the root of C.

Go into the boot.ini file which looks like this

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

…and edit the ini file to read like this

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

And then Re-Boot. I want/hope this re-boot will take me straight into XP, with no sign of 98SE to be seen.

There is nothing I want on the c:\drive, and all my data is on another partition. I shall leave XP on the d:\drive.

Can I then use the empty 6Gig c:\drive for the XP Pro page file or swapfile or what ever it's called now.

I used Norton Ghost to make a full clone of XP and reformated all my drives to NFTS then clone XP to drive C.

Then copied hyberfil.sys / NTLDR / Ntdetect.com to the root drive (C:) boot.ini set to :-

[boot loader]

timeout=10

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

This worked Ok for me ghost apparently alters the registry drive locations on clone. This may not be the recommended way to do it but it saved me have to reinstall all my applications.

Note: Make a backup of both systems first in case it doesn't work for you

Thanks r4, I have Acronis9 so I could do that myself. It sounds a good option. However, I am happy to keep my OS on the d:\drive - Some say it helps avoid virus attacks, but I'm not so sure - Anyway, what's this hyberfil.sys file? I don't think I have one.
