Winrar "Cycle redundancy error"

Hi,

I have a DVD-R with 2 large .RAR (Winrar) files on it. One of these archives fails to open. I get a "Cycle redundancy error" when trying to open one of them - the other one is fine. The failed archive is full of mp3z. Last time around, it worked fine. I don't know why it won't open now. I'm concerned because this archive stores hundreds of my favourite media files. What to do?

Cyclic Redundancy errors are flagged up when the drive fails to read the disk (often accompanied by a grinding noise as it tries to do so).

I have found that a cheap (Sony) DVD drive (just a reader, not writer) will often read disks that fail to be read on my more expensive DVD writers. So, if you have access to other DVD drives, it may be worth a go trying to read the disk in them. Also, carefully examine the disk for dust and marks.

I have often commented that DVDs should not be relied on for storing anything valuable and here, unfortunately, is an illustration of one of the reasons why.
