I have a 5 year old (and slowly dying) Gigabyte Slot 1 mobo with a 350 meg PII - which gives me ongoing problems.

As a "cheap" upgrade - is there anything wrong with this offer I just found at - http://www.maplin.co.uk/ - or is it as good a deal as I think ?

Hi There

The price seems ok,

Buying them parts seperate over here in Germany comes up at around the same price.

But you are not saving £125 by buying it from Mapplins, i don't know where they got that from. Maybe they are double dear to start with?

As you are running a P2 350 at the moment, unless you have changed it you would probally need a new PSU to handle the much higher power consumption.

Good Luck

Tony

I have just had a look at the Maplins link you gave.

There individual prices for them items are unbelievable

A15AY CPU Cooler - XP2800+ £19.99 Offer ends in 22 days

A27AT Athlon XP2400+ CPU £154.99 Offer ends in 22 days

A80AR Asrock K7VT2 Skt A £99.99 Offer ends in 22 days

The CPU over here cost € 96

The motherboard cost € 49.98

and the Coller cost € 25

Exchange rate at the moment is £ 1.00 = € 1.39

So if you get them, MAKE sure that you get the offer, otherwise go somewhere else.

Good luck

Tony

Some very interesting stuff there !

Do Planet Micro have the "Nellie2 seal of approval" ?

Being a poor ignorant southerner, I've never heard of them before. :(

Don't know Boris to be honest........ I was just doing a bit of a search around. The point is that if you look you could find some good deals. Might be worthwhile asking around to see if anyone has dealt with them before.

Had another look at their home page and they have a shop and phone numbers and everything so it is looking quite good........and they are based in Manchester so if they mess you about there is a certain forum member who lives up that way who could sort them out for you!!

Thanks for the kind threat !

I do see that some of their bundles aren't exactly what they seem to be ? - different CPUs, mobo's to what is described as their contents on your bundles link.

Hi Boris, you alright m8.

I have, in the past, used planet micro to get quite a few bundles. I found that every thing went together seamlessly, they do know there business well. Delivery was always on time and I have never had to return one item. All the computers I have built from there cheap bundles are still steady as rocks. I put three units into a network for a firm and they are plugging away 24\7. They are never switched off.

On the minus side, I have not used them recently,a coup[le of very competitive stores have opened locally. :D

Mind you, you know my luck, so stay clear.lol :(
