leejam Posted December 27, 2005 Report Share Posted December 27, 2005 Hiya all,This is my first time here, I'm from Western Australia and am having problems installing XP pro on my daughters machine.The computer had Xandros Linux on it and XP Pro before that, so I know that it works with windows on it.The error I am getting is concerning "installing sparrow.sys" and the error code 8192.I have tried installing 98se (which went on without a hitch) and copying the cabs over of XP, but it still gets to that particular file and has problems copying the file, then lots of other problems crop up, to do with the shell and a few other things.The cd is a genuine WinXP Pro cd, and it's a valid install.I'm a bit stuck, and I have tried googleing for the answers and checking the knowlegdebase at microsoft but I can't come up with anything.Hope you can help!Thanks,Lee Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Welcome to Windows Forum :smile: Furthering Scuzzman's suggestion that the copy of XP may be faulty, is there any chance of you borrowing another disk to see if that wil load? It is perfectly in order to do this provided you have a product key and that the copy of XP is not validated for another machine. Note, however, that to be legitimate, another disk must be the same issue of XP otherwise you will not be able to insert the key or validate the installation. -pops- Posted December 27, 2005 Report Share Posted December 27, 2005 Do you have any hardware on the machine other than that essential to install the O/S?If yes, it would be best to remove everything other than that which is necessary for the installation i.e keep only hard drive, CD ROM, RAM. leejam Posted December 27, 2005 Author Report Share Posted December 27, 2005 Hi again,The computer only has the basics. It's a P4 1.6 with 256Mb RAM and a 40Gb Hdd. The only "exotic" thing is a wireless networking card. No SCSI at all. Everything else is on the motherboard.I'll try borrowing another copy of xp and seeing if that works.What annoys me is that I can't even copy the cabs off the cd without it giving me an error.Edited to add scsi info Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
