doug
I followed up on your suggestion to our nel when she asked about saving e-mails in that I downloaded a copy of oehelp. I used it to backup my e-mails and address book. I've just reverted to a previous version OF IE from 6 to 5.something following a suggestion by andsome. Everything seems very sprightly now but have lost the contents of my address book. I cannot see hoe to restore from oehelp. Suggestions please. :o
Guest Nellie2
Didn't you save your address book as a *wab file? I put mine on a CD but found I had to copy it to my hard drive from the CD and then import it back into outlook express from there. It wouldn't import straight from the CD for some reason. doug
Yes it did save as a wab file to another partition but when I try to import into address book it says there was an error. What next?
Guest Nellie2
what error?? Why don't you just try double clicking the wab file and see if it will open up.......might work!! You could also try putting your wab file in the same partition as outlook express. I put mine in my documents and it went quite happily in from there. doug
Just tried that and it came back with the error message again. Could it be because it's now an earlier version?
Guest moon
I'm not sure at which stage you changed your OE version, doug, but it might be relevant. If you've still got the version your WAB folder was in you should be able to navigate to it in your programme files and open it from there. I really don't know if WAB files are backwards-compatible. doug
I was running IE6 when I saved the file. I reverted to the previous version 5.something. Now I can't restore the address book. All my e-mails are still there, however.
Guest moon
WEll, if you find that it's impossible to import an OE6 WAB into OE5 you'll just have to reinstall OE6 or manually copy your files into 5. As long as you've got a back-up of your WAB you're Ok. Can you see your files from start/run/wab ? I'm in the dark really but I've just been looking at this;http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/wab.htm#movewabThe Windows Address Book is actually a separate program that is used by OE. Few users discover that this program, usually found at C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\wab.exe, can be used outside of Outlook Express. Since the path to wab.exe is stored in the default Windows path, you can usually start WAB by clicking Start| Run and typing wab to open the default OE WAB. But by adding the /? command line switch, you can see that WAB has possibilities beyond just the OE Address Book, namely standalone WABs that function outside of OE.
doug
Right, just tried those. No go. Will have to re-install IE 6 then manually print out the addresses, revert to 5 then re-type them in. I had to do this a long time ago. Wish me luck.
Guest moon
Sorry I can't be of more help, doug, other than to say that I keep an updated copy of my entire OE programme folder on my second h/d for emergencies. DBXtract is a good tool but, like you've just discovered, nothing covers all eventualities. Good luck ! :)
doug
Just tried re-installing IE 6 and importing from the various copies I have but keep getting error 1026. I'll just have to grin and bear it. Perhaps My address book had become corrupted?
Guest moon
I'm out of my depth really, doug. Have a look at the first line in the 'cause' list here.http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=208082
