Hellraiser
HelloI ever asked myself how to associate files without extension (like .txt) to a standard application like notepad.exe. This would spare the dialogue which pops up everytime I want to open a README or spare to renam a file.
Chris
txt documents by default open in NOTEPAD.To associate any file or to reassocaite you have to alter some settings.Control Panel > Folder Options > Files types...The trick is now to associate unknown extensions with applications...Also you should get the option to use the app each time the file with this extension is opened. (cannot remeber the wording)
Guest Nellie2
I would just tick the little box that says ' always use the selected program to open this kind of file'

Hellraiser
okay you think that this is a solution, so create yourselves a file named README and try to associate a program to it.
Guest Nellie2
I thought you were trying to open a file that didn't have a program associated with it. I would just open the file that you have and associate the program that you want to use with it and tick the little box!

Craig
okay you think that this is a solution, so create yourselves a file named README and try to associate a program to it.What type of file? Thats what Hellraiser is getting at,for the sake of his query i think he means that he has a variety of files without extensions, and these files can be anything from a .txt file to a .gif, all he wants is a general application to open any file he clicks on that hasnt got an extension. If i am right, i dont think you are going to be able to do it. Even if Windows does support such a function, one application dedicated to opening all files without file extensions will not successfully open every file as their are so many different types of files. For example, have you ever tried to open a file that you know is a .exe in MS Word?!
