Windows won't install!

Added a new hard drive to the mix, want to make it the primary and install Windows on it but I am having some problems. XP setup starts without a hitch when I boot up the computer with the Windows CD in the drive. Files are copied to the hard drive from the CD, the computer restarts and that's where I run into a wall. Now everytime I get to step two (the computer restarting during setup) I get the message: "Error loading operating system." Either that or "Disc read error." In order to get my computer to function at all I have to change settings in the CMOS to bypass my new drive (set as the primary/master drive) and boot up from the other.

I don't know where I'm going wrong. What is most frustrating is that the newly installed hard drive is identical to the one that was there in the first place. These issues didn't plague that drive's installation so I don't know what is going on. Others have had this same problem but I can't seem to find a definitive fix for this anywhere! Help!

Am I right in thinking that you are installing your new O/S with the old one still in place?

If so, remove the drive with XP already on it, set your new drive to Master and put it in the place of your old drive i.e. as the "C" drive.
