As I said then I've got PC running by using my "old" S3 graphics card. Now this has a massive 4 MB memory. Does this explain the very jerky and erratic mouse movements and dramatically slow down/page refresh problems I'm now getting?I'm popping along to a PC fair on Sunday for a browse and possibly buy a replacement card - bearing in mind the excellent recommendations for cards in my other threads. I'm quite happy to wait until I get a replacement provided these current symptoms are not hinting at other problems. If it's all down to the card is there any possible way to improve the situation in the meantime?It's a K7S5A MB + 512 MB RAM running WXPSP2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
djohn Posted February 17, 2006 Report Share Posted February 17, 2006 I think your right doug, its the low memory of your graphic card that is causing the problem. Try uninstalling the mouse from device manager then reboot and see if it will pick up the drivers again. Once you've done that, go into mouse properties and see if you can make it a little smoother from there. Try moving the slider more to the right to increase the speed movement of the mouse as this sometimes helps. :)[Edit] Have you installed the drivers for the new temporary card your using and remembered to remove the old drivers? doug Posted February 17, 2006 Author Report Share Posted February 17, 2006 Didn't do anything regarding the display drivers. I started looking into it the moment I was up and running. However, the driver for the old GeForce card had vanished and the driver for the S3 Virge DX/GX was present. Spooky! The mouse is an intellimouse 4 button+scroll wheel job. Should I just remove it from the driver list and re-boot?One niggling problem that I used to have is that I can now do a normal re-start. Before the card problem I always had trouble rebooting in that it would go into a restart then the moment it got to the splash screen it would restart again. But If I went to a cold start it would boot up normally. funny that, I was thinking that might have been the problem some else has recently had. djohn Posted February 17, 2006 Report Share Posted February 17, 2006 Yes, just remove the mouse details and reboot, windows will find the mouse on reboot and use its own driver. doug Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Share Posted February 18, 2006 Thanks DJ. Just done that. Still the jerky movements, especially when something else - such as page update - is going on. I have reduced the display setting from 24 bit to 16 bit and there is possibly a slight improvement. Interestingly in System it said I had 512 MB memory installed but only 273.48 MB available. Reducing the display and there is now a whole 287.72 MB available. So it just looks like the card. that's a relief - looking on the bright side.
