Here is the scenario. I have one computer that has DSL connection to the internet. I have a phone that is connected into a phone line. Well I installed Winfax on the machine and all I want to do is send faxes but not receive them, but I also want the phone to use the same phone line. Basically I need to have one phone line so my modem can call out to fax and when I need to I can pick up my phone and call someone and also someone can call me. I thought this was a simple process but I can get it to work. Any suggestions or instructions?

My setup is ADSL ethernet router for my broadband Internet connection plus an Olitec FAX modem on the filtered analogue section of the BT line input to my home. The modem is connected to the computer via a USB port. There is also a phone connected to the line which I don't use very much as I have a separate line for the main phone.

The analogue part of the line has a splitter for the phone handset and the modem. It all works satisfactorily for in/out FAXing and conventional phone.

The Olitec modem is a bit special, I suppose, because it has a smartcard memory in it to allow FAX reception when the computer is switched off but otherwise, it is an ordinary analogue modem with which I can connect to the Internet if required.

Edit: added a bit more detail.
