I thought this might interest a peep or two. The artist, Adrian Nutbeem, who is also an environmental engineer, split his monitor cable and fed each of the fifteen strands into his display piece. The signal goes into the horizontal components of the large wall-mounted copper grid and is collected and displayed by the monitor on the other side. A direct current is fed into the vertical component and runs the fairy lights at the top. The cross-over points on the grid are insulated from each other by a transparent resin.

The pc runs a Powerpoint presentation which displays , for three seconds at a time, various 'hot-spots' around the globe where climatic changes, brought about partly by our own mis-use of natural resources, have resulted in unusual rises in temperature.

The artwork is intended to impress upon the Internet fraternity, us that is, that the present means of production of the energy which keeps us all 'up' is slowly but surely making our planet uninhabitable. Adrian Nutbeem points out that for around $3,000 U.S. each of us could have our own solar-powered unit which would not only run our homes and small businesses but would also provide enough energy for each of us to sell the surplus back to our respective national grids. The technology is advanced enough to run on light alone and is not dependent upon the heat of the sun so it functions even in cold areas and at times when the hours of daylight are shorter than average. I was that impressed with the artist's lecture that I've decided to incorporate a unit into the roof of my outbuilding when the time comes round to repair it. I figure it will pay for itself within two years and from then on I'll be feeding 'moonjuice' back into the grid at a profit. B)

Top grade observation, tankus. :) It's my studio when there's no exhibition showing , otherwise it's a gallery. My permanent studio needs a bit of work yet, that is, a kitchen and a bathroom.

Have you got any info on these units then moon?? I was always under the impression that for solar power to be effective you had to have direct sunlight, something that is not in abundance for any length of time where I live!!!

Nellie, I think the panels you are thinking of are for heating water for Central Heating etc. Solar panels can generate electricity with just light striking them.

I think you are probably right there Northy......... but, I am still interested in what is involved but as with everything else.... there are so many sharks out there ready to take you for a ride.... I would like a bit more info if poss.........links etc?? Reputable products???

I'm in touch with a world-class expert in Cumbria, nellie, so I'll post info as I receive it. The modern units work on all daylight, direct sunlight or not, although the stronger the sun the better. You can build your system from the basic 60 watt units up to whatever you need. BP are producing one that looks just like a roof tile for visually sensitive areas.( Another example of art/technology splicing :) ) I'm told that any south-facing roof area will provide more than enough light to power a home. Electricity companies provide the means to meter and sell your excess back into the grid. I'll keep you posted. :)
