XP is normally OK but previous incarnations (95, 98, ME) are best defragged either in safe mode or with an independent defragmentation program. andsome Posted March 17, 2006 Report Share Posted March 17, 2006 If you are using one of the older operating systems, try pressing Ctrl/Alt and delete together. If my memory serves me you will then see a box with the running programs shown. Highlight one and select end task. Keep doing the same thing until everything except Systray and Explorer have been stopped from running. Some may need doing twice. You can then run scan disk and defrag.
