Guest Nellie2 Posted June 4, 2003 Report Share Posted June 4, 2003 All this week I have been dashing up and down the M56 in pursuit of health, happiness and work!! :( Now it is a busy stretch of road at any time but today must have been the day that they let all the loonies have a go behind the wheel!! This morning there was a motorcyclist charging up the hard shoulder ......... there was your usual twit who refused to move out of the middle lane even though the inside lane was going faster than he was........ the so and so who suddenly decided that he needed to get off at the exit I was passing so he travelled over from the outside lane to the exit right in front of me.Do you have a favourite motorway story?? After 300 or so miles I hit the M65, only 6 miles to go, theres a range rover in front of me and suddenly it does a triple salco out of no-where. It just overturned...frightened the hell out of me so I phone the police and went to see if anyone was injured. Sat in the front seats are two lads, laughing their heads off with not a mark on them. They had been smoking some serious substances and didn't give a monkeys. I found myself at first smiling then laughing along with them, its the most surreal few minutes I have ever spent. Tankus Posted June 4, 2003 Report Share Posted June 4, 2003 Several years ago while going up the M4 from Llanelli to Swansea ,I overtook a big 6 axle artic with Irish plates, probably on the Ireland ~Fishguard~Dover ~continent run. The driver was doing close to 70mph ,while READING THE SUN NEWSPAPER on his steering wheel....!I did nt have a mobile phone then........ I had just got off the motorway and the rain was coming down for all it was worth. It was late and the road was clear but it was a bendy road and very dark. I thought I could see something in the distance but couldn't quite make it out. I started to break gently......just in case as it was not the weather for banging your breaks on. Out of the gloom this dark shape was coming towards me. I came to a halt but the shape kept on coming, there was nothing I could do but brace myself and wait. It stopped about 3 feet from me. What was it? Well a car had been speeding the other way on the wet road, had skidded on the corner and was sliding towards me sideways. We checked that each other were ok....... it was a bit of a shock!! and then proceeded on our way. The next NASCAR race of the year was also in Las Vegas that weekend. We were driving down Interstate 40 on our way out there, when a NASCAR hauler passed us. Then another one passed us, then another. Pretty soon we realized we were surrounded by NASCAR haulers. There were about 20 or so all traveling together.The driver of one our trucks got on the CB radio and started yakkin' and the NASCAR guys, and found out they were going to the same place we were, and challenged them to a race to Vegas. The next thing you know there were all these semi-trucks screaming down the highway in Arizona at 80 miles an hour, with all the drivers yelling taunts at each other over the radio.But sadly, those NASCAR guys had much better rigs than us... Guest moon Posted June 9, 2003 Report Share Posted June 9, 2003 Nice story, Ax :) In the early 70's the road from Perth to Sydney, 3,000 miles, was largely unmade and the trip took 6-7 days. The middle section was through the Nullarbor Plain, a thousand miles of rough track, and I can clearly remember the sillhouettes of kangaroos against the setting sun, the 'black boy' cacti dotted across the desert and the eerie sense of a cool vastness as we passed through a salt lake at night. The road was corrugated, the passage of vehicles having thrown up humps at regular intervals. 60mph was the optimum speed for comfort as the van would rise up a hump and come down approximately in the middle of the next trough. Any other speed and the vibrations would rattle your jaw. Anyway, about every three hundred miles there was a 'station' for fuel. We pulled into the one slap in the centre, just a wooden shack with dust whipping round it, and two guys came out to the pump. They were twin brothers . All around were deformed animals, like a freak show, two chickens joined together , a three horned goat , an eyeless llama, weird. The strangest thing though was that these two guys shared sentences when they spoke. One would start to say something and then the other one would finish off, real smooth like. I was only there for ten minutes but it's burned into my head. Few experiences since have made such a deep impact.
