Windows Installer

Recommended Posts

Hi

I’m trying to install BootVis (on XP pro sp2)– this utility will supposedly speed up my boot process.

Anyway when I run it I get this error (in Chinese , sorry about my bad translation)

Could not open Windows Installer service. Perhaps you are running in safe mode , or Windows Installer is not installed properly. Please contact your administrator for assistance

Can I reinstall Windows Installer ? If yes , how?

Yes.

Microsoft Installer

You might want to also read this: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/syspe...ot/default.mspx

Please note that Bootvis.exe is not a tool that will improve boot/resume performance for end users. Contrary to some published reports, Bootvis.exe cannot reduce or alter a system's boot or resume performance. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system.

There is also a newer version of Windows Installer 3.1 available (KB893803). Make sure you select the same language as your Windows system.

Thanks, I installed the new version but I still get the same error. Could this be a virus?

We tried installing Rising anti-virus (A Chinese software I think) but it wouldn't install , only in safe mode.

This could mean some malware that is preventing the Windows Installer from running in normal mode.

Please read this topic on how to install and run HijackThis, then post the report in this forum. Do not attempt to fix anything by yourself until an expert has reviewed your log and gives you instructions!
