Resolved -Missing CD drive

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I had been using Windows forever, and decided to try out something new - so I partitioned off a part of my hard drive and installed SuSE Linux. After doing this, my CD drive won't show up in Windows alongside the hard drives etc. (under "my computer", I'm sorry if that's not the right name but my computer runs in Swedish). I don't think that I physically cut off the drive, because I also run a couple of virtual CD drives and they aren't displayed either.

Have you got any idea as to what might have happened, and what to do about it?

Thanks in advance,

Heather

Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!

Could it be that the new partition has taken the drive letter that was used by the CD drive before?

Did you try to reboot, and it still does not show up?

Did you try to put a CD into the drive, maybe it will show with a new drive letter?

Check out this article; it shows how to assign or change drive letters

Hey, thank you for answering.

The Linux partition hasn't been assigned a drive letter, as far as I can see - in the "Disk Management" section of "Computer Management" my hard drive shows up as C and an external hard drive as G.

Before Linux, I think the cd drive was listed as a separate disk, but it doesn't anymore so I couldn't fins a way of changing drive letters.

Rebooting doesn't work, nor does inserting a cd.

I don't really know what to do, I've tried downloading the latest firmware from the manufacturer's website but it won't install as "the driver is not present".

Any suggestions still very much appreciated ^^

You do not need to upgrade firmware, unless you are having a problem.

You should try Pat's suggestion.

Right click My Comuter > Properties. Go to Hardware tab, and click device manager.

Under CD-ROM, click your CD/DVD-ROM and go to properties.

Make sure the assigned drive letter is not already taken.

I did what you said, and in "device manager">cd-rom name>"Properties" my cd drive returns the error message (approximate translation) "We cannot load this device's driver. It is possible that the driver is damaged or missing. (Code 39)" So I press "Update driver" and windows update tells me that "No better driver was found."

I couldn't find any info on the assigned letters, though, under which tab in cd-rom name>"Properties" are they displayed?

I'm sorry to be such a nuisance :)

Try this to see the drive letter for your CD drive.

Start / right click My Computer / Manage / Disk Management.

All your drives should be listed in their with there drive letters.

Also from advice given, try Uninstall instead of Update drivers and then reboot your computer to see if that cures the problem.
