Audio playback

I am attempting to make an audio connection with MSN Messenger, but get screeching when trying to hear the other person.

I have tested my hardware by doing this;

Control Panel\Sound and Audio Device Properties\Voice\Voice Recording\Test Hardware.......... the recording element is fine, but when I come to test the playback, there is a screeching noise.

What things do I need to check to stop this happening?

I have checked all my settings with a friend who can hear me perfectly over MSN Messenger.

I have Norton Security Suite installed. Is this anything to do with the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Screeching noises are often due to acoustic feedback. This occurs when a microphone picks up sound emanating from speakers. The sound builds up and up with each feedback cycle until the amplifier is overloaded.

Try turning down the speaker volume and/or moving the microphone as far as possible away from the speakers.
