Blue Screen crash

Ok now I have had a blue screen crash and the screen said before it too disintergrated that it was a new hardware or software problem and should be uninstalled.

Lately every time I boot up the yellow shield for auto downloads appears and the message to restart. But I have had no new patches since 10.5.06 on my programs.

Also inadvertently switched on virus scan on boot. Now taken that off too.

Together with defender scanning on boot, it was a bit much maybe. Noise was incredable thought my hard drive was stuffed.

So have checked what the microsoft site said once the report was complete and I was directed there and it told me this time was the modem ADSL which is DSL200 and only 5 months in operation. Went onto their site and they said that windows XP had had a problem with blue screen crashes due to some gremlin and their modems.

Now have uninstalled latest program which is C Cleaner, which I think is a great program, still have it in my start ups file in case I can reinstall it. Remembering that the first crash occured prior to installing ccleaner.

Then I uninstalled Windows Defender as quite honestly it is a disappointment as it scanned and found nothing ever and at same time my adaware and spybot found stuff and deleted it following the defender scan. Not as good as the original imho Which I now do not have.

So today booted up and no scans but I still had the download shield showing even before my modem had connected me to the internet, and then it too disappeared.

So I have turned off auto downloads and said to notify me instead.

Does anyone have any other advice.

This being the second crash - first saying it was a driver in my monitor.

BSOD = micro$oft's way of saying... there's "something" wrong, but we don't know what! :(

It's generally the RAM in my opinion, but try changing components until it fixes it, check the error reports too, possibly overheating, etc.

As for all the other things, sounds a bit odd, maybe uninstall all your spyware removal/av tools, try to remove anything you know of manually, then install them all and make sure they're all up to date again.

Not quite clear - did the crash occur during startup or later?

My "philosophy" is to have as few items loaded during startup as possible. I would never allow any scans or cleanups run during startup - too many (important) things are loaded during startup, including drivers etc. All my scans (Windows Defender, Ewido) are scheduled to run when I don't use the computer.

Even with 50% of things that automatically run by default at startup removed, it still takes 3 minutes to complete startup of my Windows XP. I usually wait until startup is 100% complete until I start using the computer - never (well, almost) had any problems with that method.

A good tool to remove unwanted/unneeded startup programs is Startup Inspector, but I won't go into details here.

Regarding the download shield you are seeing during startup, I would try to resolve this by running Microsoft Update and see what updates it wants to download.

OK - crash occurred when I was reading my email, I had started up the computer around or just prior to 3pm that day and I had windows defender set to scan at 3pm, also had on checking for reasons for first crash to start with I checked all my programs to see if working and what was checked etc and must have decided to check auto scan on start up on my AVG free edition anti virus as second time after crash - next day starting up big noise as hard drive working hard once more and then up came the message from AVG scan complete all fine etc. Then the penny dropped and I unchecked the auto scan on that. I usually turn on and then wait a while for it to do its start up procedures and sometimes come back and find it connected to ASDL and emails waiting, if I sit down and start have to check for emails to get it to connect etc so it was actually at that time scanning 2 lots and downloading a heap of emails and scanning those as I hadnt been on it for a couple of days and emails had piled up.

I have since run diagnostic which I found on another site on how to repair windows and evrything in drivers and active x is running properly. I tested them and ok. Just said I didnt have one driver installed so could not test it. CAnt be a problem can it? Everything seems to be working without it maybe never ever had it.

I seem to never stop learning more and more about this computer and how everything operates - no wonder people get into it for hours

I have been to download site and it did download an update for the genuine advantage tool. Twice actually as as soon as I had done it manually it also notified me of a download and installed it again, same one. :0

I have reinstalled a slim version of CCleaner and run it.

Hence when I tried to reply on here wasnt logged on as I forgot to uncheck cookies so it deleted all. I run Cookie Wall fo keep the ones I want etc - and it deletes any I have previously said to do so and notifies me of new cookies all the time, bit of a pain sometimes but hey no tracking cookies found when I run Adaware or Spybot since installed. :D

Both above say system is clean. I do update everything at least once a week sometimes more often if I get alert re new goblins on the lookout for my computer from Washington Post Techs.

Hopefully everything now hunky dory you reckon?

Going to Inspector start up site to check that out right now.

Very concsious of how long it used to be starting up and have tried to do thing and seems to be working as takes only a couple of minutes to start up and be ready etc.

Lukas I did as you said too uninstalled and reinstalled both adaware and spybot.

I havent put back 'windows defender as I was not too impressed with it as never found anything when the other 2 did so looking for a third free program to take its place.

I did like the Anti spyware (exGiant) version much better and had faith that it was actually doing things.

Sounds like you've got a Ram Problem, You could download " MaxMem " and give it a shot, It helped me alot..!

Just make sure it's set to start with windows..! ;)

There are many, many reasons why a "blue screen of death" occurs; we cannot just assume that every BSOD can be cured with the same method.

Can you check the Event Viewer if it shows some significant entry around the time of death?

Pat - had a look at what is the event log - never found that before - learning more re this crash and wow so much more to see I reckon

Anyway Application Management Seervice is what is reported to be off and then started and off again and then started - for around 5 times.

I don't know what the Application Management service exactly does; it seems to be used for application installation or removal. It is started manually, so seeing it start and stop several times may be normal, depending what happened at the time.

Meanwhile I have learnt a bit more about them. Can only be good.
