Cnet Review:

avast! 4 Home Edition is a free, complete ICSA certified and Secure Computing Magazine awarded antivirus software for home noncommercial use. Avast! includes the following components: On Demand Scanner--with skinnable simple interface--just select what do you want to scan in which way and press the Play button; On Access Scanner--special providers to protect the most of available e-mail clients; Instant Messaging--ICQ, Miranda; Network traffic--intrusion detection--lightweight firewall; P2P protection for Kazza, BitTorrent; Web shield--monitors and filter all HTTPtraffic; NNTP Scanner--scans all Usenet Newsgroup traffic and all operations with files on PC; Boot Time Scanner--scans disks in the same way and in the same time as Windows CHKDSK does. True automatic incremental updates are small and fast.

Version 4.7.827 improves detection, lower memory footprint, CPU load and adds new languages to 26 in total.

My Review:

Avast, like Mcafee and Norton, provides it's users with "On Demand" or "On Access" virus protection (Monitors every activity of your computer in real time). The difference is that Mcafee and Norton use up so much of your precious memory and resources that they can slow your computer down to a crawl. Avast, on the other hand, requires much lower overhead and therefore does the same job without slowing you down. Another powerful feature of this software is its Virus recovery database. Every time your computer is idle or goes into screen-saver mode, this little jewel of a program goes to work and checks for every file that has been modified since it last checked. It then copies all modified files into its protected database (keeps 5 versions of the same file). If a virus infects any files, Avast can restore the files from its database and save you a lot of time and hassle. The best feature of Avast is that it is totally free for home use.
