XP Professional Internet problems

Recommended Posts

Hi XP Gurus

Having trouble getting a stable internet connection.

XP was installed. Then I installed my modem. XP said modem was 'working properly'. Indeed it dialed-up correctly and i got online.

I installed the disc driver that came with the modem - Windows came up with warning about 'not verfied software' and that i might make the system unstable - i continued anyway. And sure enough the internet copnnection went haywire about 'security warning' and 'registry problems'!

I installed a standard modem driver from within windows - same thing happened.

The self install said it couldnt find any drivers for the modem and 'would you like to searhc the internet?' - that would be a bit difficult if I havent got a working modem!

Any ideas

Yes, but the same thing happens when I reinstall the modem.

I get a message saying ' this software is not revified by windows and could casue stability problems'. When I connect to internet (succesfully) afetr a few minutes a big message comes up on the screen saying 'security alert..bla blah blah ' and ' registry problems'.

It occurs everytime I install my modem.

If let windows onstall it itself it says 's'search the internet' but I cant becuase my modem doesn t work!

The driver on the install disk causes this windows warning as well, just before you install it.

Any Ideas?

What software are you trying to install ?

Is your modem compatable with XP ?

click here for info on if your modem needs a driver etc.

Yes Modem is external serial, compatible modem.

The drivers come with the modem on the CD.

Also tried the default drivers during auto-install.

Both times I get a warning about 'this software is not tested by windows ...could make system unstable'.

You said in your first post

If this is the case, why are you bothering to install unnecessary software after it is running?

Hi

It says modem is working properly once I have installed driver.

I dial up and it connects. the I get an error after a few minutes browsing 'security alert' and 'registry problem' windows come up and the system freezes.

The problem is when I start surfing, not when I install, though I do get an lert when I am installing the driver which says ' this software is not verfified to work with hardware' and 'could make your system unstable'. It says this even for a simple default modem driverfrom the windows driver directory.

I think it is something to do with firewall and security control...but I dont know much about these things.

You latest reply gives a somewhat different aspect to the problem.

Can you tell us something about the modem e.g. model no. Is it new? Have you successfully used it elsewhere? Are you installing the drivers/software EXACTLY according to the instructions? Have you tried another modem?

The message you are getting suggests that either the modem wasn't designed for XP or there is something wrong with your XP installation. Is SP2 installed?

It is a Zoom modem, serial, external, compatible with XP. Have also tried SCSI and USB modems, installed as per instructions - same problem. Surfs for a few minutes then a windows 'security alert' appears on the screen and the system crashes.

Not sure if I have xp SP2 or not - how do i tell and what if I have, or have not?

Think the problem is in the modem install. Whether I manually install or let windows do it, it comes up with a warning that the software in not tested by windows and may cause instability! But it IS a compatible modem and driver.

To check for SP2: open Control Panel and click on "System". On the "General" tab it will state the version of XP installed.

I'm not suggesting that SP2 (or lack of it) is the cause of the problem but, to be of any use nowadays it ought to be installed. If, when you try to install, it comes up with an error, this indicates there is something fundamentally wrong with the original XP installation which, from what you have said, seems likely.

Thanks. Yes, I think you could be right.

I am at work so I cant check it now, but i'll look when I get home.

Can I just download SP2 and install in on my PC on top on my own XP prof version?

Do I install XP first, then immediatley do the SP update?

Do I just need SP2, or do I need all those other SP2 updates as well?

: )

(I cant automatically update because I cant get online to do this, so can i download it at work and just update via a CD copy?)

SP2 is a large download (266MB) so, unless you have a fast connection, it will take a long time.

You can get it in a disk-writable form from here.

You do not need SP1 as well.

Install XP then SP2. You ought, also, to install an antivirus program before you connect to the Internet then other anti-malware programs.

Have a look at this as well.

Have a look in the security section on this forum. You will see what members think of various safety and security software.

For my own part I've been using these for a long time: AVG, Spybot S&D, Sygate firewall, Ewido, Ad-Aware, A squared, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard.
