Time does not hold on laptop

Recommended Posts

I have a laptop but it does appear that the time is not holding - I suspect a battery problem but looking at the manual the laptop has a main battery (which appears to be working as it charges runs etc) and a secondary battery. Please could someone advise as to whether it is the secondary battery that is the problem. Thanks.

Almost certainly the "secondary" battery. This is the one that keeps the BIOS in order and the timebase for the correct operation of the machine (the clock that you see on screen is only a minor function of the battery).

Although the computer will function without the BIOS battery, it will only work at the default settings as each time you power down, all changes to the BIOS will be lost - including the clock).

I don't know much about laptops per se so look in the manual for the machine to find out how to change the battery and for the battery type (most likely a flat "button" cell). It should be fairly easy to change.
