I cannot install Flash Player 8

Recommended Posts

Please help, I have Microsoft Windows XP (not a mac user) and am stuck with Flash Player 6. Everytime I go to Macromedia to download Flash Player 8, I get the flash banner saying it was successfully installed, but it never is. Rebooting doesnt do anything either. I also turned off my firewall, but that still didnt help. I went to my add/remove programs sections to try to remove Flash Player 6, and it wasnt even on there. However Flash Player 8 was in that section, and it would not let me change/remove. I do have Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, but it is the older version from a few years ago. Maybe that is conflicting with the plug ins? Can anyone please help? thanks

Try downloading the standalone installer and running it from your PC ?

Link to it here :- http://www.softwarepatch.com/internet/flash.html

Thanks Boris, I hadnt seen that link before. However it still does not work and I am still stuck w/ version 6 after I installed it from that link. I even uninstalled Macromedia Flash MX, which is part of my Dreamweaver package and I still couldnt access version 8. As a matter of fact when I uninstalled Flash MX I had no flash player on my PC, even after reinstalling version 8. I think it must be something with my Dreamweaver, because why else could I not install and use version 8? The other weird thing is on my add/remove section version 8 is their, but it wont let me remove it. When I try to open a flash file with a different program, version 8 is nowhere to be found on my PC.

I recently had the same problem. The only cure that I could find was to uninstall the program, then search for remaining files and manually delete these. I then ran Crap Cleaner and RegScrub XP, and the installation then worked.

I also recently had problems with Flash; I couldn't get it to delete properly and so I couldn't do a fresh install.

I did cure it however by downloading the Flash uninstaller from Adobe and re-installing from here.

Thanks dagwood. I havent tried that method, but I just did now and it still didnt work. I dont think its my PC because the same thing happened to my other PC, also a Microsoft Windows XP one. I may have to just uninstall my entire Macromedia Dreamweaver MX program when I have time tomorrow. But if its not that, then I dont know whats going on. The only common link I can think of between the 2 PC's that couldnt upgrade to Flash 8 is Dreamweaver. Even the anti-virus on the other PC is different. I cant figure out what else would be the problem, especially since I used the link you sent and removed Flash 8 totally from the PC.
