hwlessner4 Posted June 24, 2006 Report Share Posted June 24, 2006 I run Windows XP Pro...service pack 2, and cannot get videos to work correctly on my computer. No matter if I play them on Windows Media Player ( I have 10) or RealPlayer, they are all dark. The video is much darker than desired. It only occurs on videos that I have stored on my computer though. If it is on a DVD, the video is fine (but I am using a different player). I personally don't like either of those media players, and i have had many quirky problems like this from both of them. My personal preference is for Media Player Classic. you don't have to install it, just run it from anywhere. What kind of video files are they? are they ripped from a dvd, or obtained from another source? you said that they will play just fine correct? the problem is that they are dark?Is it possible that there is a codec problem? It is ripped DVD's and even streaming videos that will play "dark." Again, they play normally except the fact that the visual on the player is dark.i tried Media Player Classic...it is dark as well...I am using a Dell Laptop. The problem started when I took my external monitor off and started using my laptop monitor again. It will still play DVD's from my E Drive just fine...but anything from my Hard Drive or External Hard Drive plays very dark. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

cozofdeath Posted July 8, 2006 Report Share Posted July 8, 2006 Assuming its not hardware related or a brightness setting in your windows media player, it could be a codec. I know you already installed a player but try VLC. Its helped me and many others with problems and it uses its own codecs. Is this problem only with your ripped dvds? Also what format did you rip them to (mpeg-2(dvd), divx, xvid, avi)? If the video does work, good, we know its a codec problem and not directshow/directx or a hardware setting/problem.
