HP Laserjet 4 Plus Smell

Recommended Posts

I dug my HP Laserjet 4 Plus out of the closet the other day, and hooked it up to see if it would work. After dusting it off, I hit the magic button, and it turned on. It warmed up and went to the "Ready" screen. Then, I noticed a burning smell coming from the fan on top. I immediately turned it off and unplugged it. Is there any idea what this could be caused by?

Dude.? , Your printer has a fan in it..?? Ok, Thats a new one on me.

Does it actually get hot when it's on..??

Well all i could suggest is to make sure it's extra good and clean.. Inside and out.. And make sure that all moving parts are just that " Still Moving "

It has a fan because it is a laser printer. It can get hot, because i believe the insides of a laser printer are similar to a copy machine.

Yes the fan was running. I just tried the built-in test page that you don't need a cable for, and it works fine. I ran it through a couple times, but the smell still remained. It was even worse when printing because the fan kicked into high gear. Yes, the fan was running the whole time, but I didn't run it for much over a minute.

Seems to me you have three choices:

1. Get it professionally serviced.

2. Use it in the hope that the smell will go away and everything will be OK.

3. Place it in the bin.
