the who Posted June 28, 2006 Report Share Posted June 28, 2006 I have windows 2000 and when I tried to shut down, the little dialog box that says "please wait" has disappeared and the computer can only be turned off by physically pressing the power switch. It still logs me off and it quits when the dialog box would say "windows is shutting down" because the desktop backround is the default blue instead of my background. I also can't log off and log back on because the dialog box has disappeared.I thought this was an effect of recently installing the windows defender beta (why did I want that anyway?), so i uninstalled it and the problem still occurred.When I start up into safe mode, the computer shuts down just fine.Does this sound like a virus or is it something stupid I did?Please help me, I don't want to reinstall windows because of this silly little problem Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Is it up-to-date, and did you run a full scan recently?Do you have anti-spyware installed? (Not something useless like Windows Defender, but a serious anti-spyware like Ewido). Is it up-to-date, and did you run a full scan recently? (If "no", "no", "no", you can run an online scan from http://www.ewido.net/).Do you have a firewall installed? If so, what, and which version? the who Posted June 29, 2006 Author Report Share Posted June 29, 2006 yes, I have all of that installed, Ad aware pro with ad-watch, zone alarm free, and mcafee viruscan enterprise 8.0i. Although I was thinking about trying the ewido because in these forums everybody reccomends it.my first problem has been magically resolved (don't ask me how). It starts up and shuts down fine nownow my new problem is the computer will boot up normally and then after a few minutes it will immeadiately power off, no shut down process. the power just gets killed. I built this computer about 1 1/2 years ago. Does this new problem sound like a hardware problem or is it still a windows problem?I did work it pretty hard yesterday when i was working on the first problem, I probably started up and shut down over 20 times.thanks for your help Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
the who Posted June 29, 2006 Author Report Share Posted June 29, 2006 and sure enough, I was in the middle of an ewido online scan, and the computer just shut off. but this time, after the computer was off, the fans inside were still running.hmmmmm......is my power suppply going bad? or am I overheating? the who Posted June 30, 2006 Author Report Share Posted June 30, 2006 i found the problemone of the latches holding the CPU heatsink on broke, which allowed the cpu to get really hot and my computer turned off automatically. i used a tie-wrap to hook it back on.and my other problem turned out to be a conflict ZoneAlarm firewall Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

(Don't uninstall from Control Panel, but go to Start -> Programs -> Zone Labs, then right-click on Uninstall Zone Labs Security, select Properties, then change Target to"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /cleanClick OK, then uninstall from here.)
