WinHelpPlz3 Posted July 2, 2006 Report Share Posted July 2, 2006 I have Windows 98SE installed on my computer and I am trying to find a better operating system like XP or Linux. I try to boot from some CDs and DVDs and they work fine. Others, I put them in and it boots right to my hard drive. I have changed the BIOS and I have autoruns on all of them. The main one that I am trying to install is Windows Vista Beta 2. It does not recognize the DVD-RW (finalized) when I either try to boot to it and when I just put it in after I have logged into Windows 98 my drive stays the same saying: (E:). Then, if I click on it, it says something like this: "Drive (E:) is not accessible. The device is not ready." Please help. -pops- Posted July 2, 2006 Report Share Posted July 2, 2006 Remember that Windows Vista is only available for testing purposes and there are likely to be problems with different installations - that is the point of it.You say you are upgrading a W98 system. Are you sure it will accomodate Vista (or even XP)? I have NEVER found upgrading a computer's operating system to be very successful and quite often, it is a complete failure. W98 to Vista is too big a jump in my opinion.Regarding your copy of Vista being on a DVDRW well, I wouldn't even trust a shopping list on one of those. Was it burned according to the instructions that were given on the Vista download site? It should be in the form of an ISO image so I'm not sure what you mean by saying you finalised it. andsome Posted July 2, 2006 Report Share Posted July 2, 2006 Most of the problems seen on this and other forums have come on the tail of upgrading from 98 to XP. I dread to think what problems might come about going from 98 to Vista. I won't even consider Vista until such time as I decide to have a new purpose built computer, made with Vista in mind. Dont ask me why I went back to Win98. But now whenever I try to install Windows XP, after all the files are finished copying, it says that hivesys.inf is corrupted. I think that my xp disk is very scratched because when I am copying the files. It always pops up saying "Setup could not copy the file..." then I press retry from 1-13 times before it loads it. I ended up only skipping 1 file through the whole copying part of the installation. I am putting Vista on my old computer for the same reason as everybody else. Spare computer and time. Please Help. -pops- Posted July 4, 2006 Report Share Posted July 4, 2006 If it is the same hard drive that you are swapping the operating systems on, it may be that each time you do this, some residues of the older system remains on the drive and it is this that prevents the successful loading of a new setup. Even after formatting, some data may be there that could cause this effect.Try doing a low level (zero fill) format of the drive. The utility to do this varies from manufacturer to manufacturer so find out the make of drive and check their web site.
