Laptop trouble...

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have an old Fujitsu-Seimens Amilo Pro V1000 laptop. I am working with the Marines in Iraq right now, and I'll admit the laptop isn't much to look at, but considering the budget the Marines get, it'll have to do.

The laptop has been working fine for months now until one day we moved it to another building for a couple hours, then brought it back. When I plugged the power adapter to the laptop, the charge status on the actual adapter and the laptop is green. But upon hitting the power button, nothing.

The laptop appears not to be getting any power whatsoever. I hold down the power button and try and listen for the hard drive spin, and nothing. I've removed the battery (it doesn't have a self test button), and every other thing I could unscrew from the bottom, re-added everything, and still nothing.

Anyone have any ideas? What's next on trouble shooting? I have been looking for where to find the CMOS battery, but haven't had any luck finding documentation on where to find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx,

-Scott

Any chance of trying another mains power unit/charger? I would think that the mains power out there is not the best or most reliable quality..

I wouldn't be too concerned about the CMOS battery, even if it's dead, it won't stop the computer from working in some sort of way.

That's a good point. I have been trying the laptop with the same power outlet. Other laptops are hooked up to the same power strip, but I'll go ahead and take the laptop back to my tent where I have my laptop hooked up. It has considerably less load and may work that way.

My only concern, if it does work, is if that does work, then I wonder why it won't start-up on the battery alone? Weird... Maybe the battery is just dead? If the battery was dead but still plugged in to external power, would the dead battery stop the power from getting to the motherboard?

Thanx for your tip.

Regarding the battery taking power, I think that may be a possibility.

If the battery was dead but still plugged in to external power, would the dead battery stop the power from getting to the motherboard?

If the battery has died* and is shorting, perhaps the PSU is unable to give out enough current for both. Just speculation, though.

*I understand they can die to open circuit and die to shorting out.
