This PC at work runs XP pro, starting about 4 months ago , this window would pop up saying "Found New Hardware" a wizard came out trying to help me install this hardware . Except I never installed any new hardware on it. Windows claim it's a "PCI simple communication controller" , what is that? I never installed anything like that. I set the wizard to look for the software online but it couldn't find it . I didn't pay much attention to it because apart from that very annoying wizard that pops up occasionaly ,everything was working smoothly.But today I tried to install Debian Linux in dual boot with that XP pro and the installer told me that it cannot go on with the installation because of a hardware problem (a" PCI controller" it said) .Can anyone advice me what I need to do? -pops- Posted July 14, 2006 Report Share Posted July 14, 2006 The PCI controller is a fundamental part of the BIOS of the motherboard - nothing to do with Windows although Windows may be sending you messages about it.The only thing I can suggest is to update/re-install the BIOS. As BIOS updating can result in a non-working machine if it goes wrong, I would never normally suggest it but, I think it's the only thing that could get over this difficulty.In addition, Alan 2273 asked this question in a duplicate thread, now deleted:Have you by any chance got a 56k modem in that computer?. -pops- Posted July 14, 2006 Report Share Posted July 14, 2006 - - - but second Windows message, a "PCI controller" may well be something more fundamental i.e. part of the BIOS.Even so, I would strongly recommend that you carry out the safer procedures/investigations first before embarking on anything to do with the BIOS. cozofdeath Posted July 14, 2006 Report Share Posted July 14, 2006 If your getting it on both OSs check if all PCI cards (sound card, NIC, modem) are all the way in. -pops- Posted July 15, 2006 Report Share Posted July 15, 2006 I would try the other options before updating the BIOS.The BIOS is specific to the motherboard model so you need to find the details then go the the motherboard manufacturers website to get the firmware and instructions on how to carry out the upgrade.Take extra care when doing this.
