Network asks for password

I have a small peer to peer network running from a Netgear switch. Three desktop pcs and two laptops.

One PC holds all the files in the shared files folder. THe two other desktops can log on an get the files they want with out problem.

One laptop is asked for a user name and password and regardless of what you type in the username (I usually type "G" or something), you hit enter and it logs on fine. Why does this laptop require a username andthe others don't?

The second laptop top is brand new and is again asked for a password, but regardless of that is typed, it cannot access the shared files folder on the "server". I have tried "my password" to sign into my laptop and I have tried another user password on the traget machine.

I have tried deselecting sharing and resetting it, I have made sure "everyone" is in the allowed lists and everything else that I have read around, but still no cure.

All XP SP2 machines.

Any suiggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Assuming the network is encrypted, is the machine requesting the WEP or WPA code to be able to access the network?

If you aren't encrypted, perhaps it's hinting that you should be.
