Summat's Up

Recommended Posts

I posted this originally under the Window section. I think it should really have been under Hardware.

So here it is again, slightly edited :-

I am still using my W98SE machine intermittantly and have for a few days had strange occurences that may have a common origin.

I keep getting sections of the screen in which the resolutiom of both colour and definition are unresolved. These are almost invariably rectangular and are often the things like the "back", "forwards", "refresh" buttons . Other times they mat be vertical rectangles at each side of a vertical column of something. I had a recent message that told me there was no mouse connected, and sure enough the one that was connected would not work. Then after a few moments it did work. Sometimes the whole sheebang lock up and a restart is the only option.

Earlier today, whilst management was looking at a site on the internet, the entire screen went white, with the exception of a black square which moved about as though it were the mouse. A restart was needed to get out of it because other than a moving square everything else was dead, including the key board.

Todays latest thing, whilst firing up Belarc Advisor was a message that said "A sharing violation occured whilst accessing C:\Prog Files|\Belarc... etc etc"

Obviously I have run updated versions of all my "baddie finders" AVG. CC. A squared. Spybot. I have ZA running all the time. Trend's on line check gave me a clean bill of health, and HJT seems to come up with nothing new. I can only think it must be something in the bowels of the machine itself....but what?

As I was copying things to my external hard drive for safe keeping, by means of drag and drop, it twice got though half a directory of stuff and then suddenly froze. Reset button being the only way out, again on both occasions.

At first I was a bit suspicious it could be the graphics card, but that is only about six months old. I am now beginning to wonder about RAM.

Any clues would be received with thanks.

humm wierd. I've never of problems like that. Does this happen in safe mode also, because I know in safe Windows uses a generic graphics driver hence the 800x600 resolution. Maybe it could atleast tell you if a driver is corrupt or something. Do you have any diagnostic software for your RAM or video card?

No,I have nothing as sophisticated as that. I have just ordered some new RAM and will shove that in when it arrives, and see if that helps matters.

A new slab of RAM made no difference. I was repeating the copying of data from HDD to XHD and after a short period the entire operation locked up and the reset button was the only thing that would work.

Presumably the HDD and the XHD do not have to be of the exact same speed. Am I correct in assuming that the slowest one will dictate the speed of the operation?
