bantots Posted August 17, 2006 Report Share Posted August 17, 2006 My neighbor just got a dsl connection. but the dsl modem supplied to him is a modem/router. previously he bought a linksys broadband router like mine (I have cable internet :-) ) and thought he could hook it up to the dsl modem and network his computers. but, it didn't work that way. We're stuck in that, the dsl modem/router that he has, already acts like a router (he can configure the LAN, and assign how many IPs he wants to use locally, etc.) but it only has ONE ETHERNET PORT! so our question is, how the heck is he supposed to network his home computers to the dsl modem/router if there's only ONE ethernet port? Do we keep trying to connect the linksys router to the dsl modem? Return the router and get a hub/switch? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
-pops- Posted August 17, 2006 Report Share Posted August 17, 2006 I think whoever supplied the modem/router wants your friend to go over to wireless.Can I check that it is/is not a wireless device? What he needs is a 4 port modem/router possibly with wireless connection.I have a Speedtouch 585i wireless router which is superb for the price range. [£58] Using one of these he can connect up to 4 machines by eithernet cable and almost as many as he wants wireless.At the moment I’m typing this from my lads Laptop which is connected wireless to the router, my desktop is connected by eithernet cable because its better if you can and the desktop unit is close to the router.I can connect to the internet with either machine without the other one being turned on and if both are on then I can surf on both at the same time. djohn Posted August 18, 2006 Report Share Posted August 18, 2006 Not sure about using a switch, though I think it may work. Which modem or router is it and the model please. If he was to use a 2 or more port modem/router then there would be no need to use the present one. The linksys router is it just a router or modem/router?
